Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is not just for women. Men can also experience a decrease in hormone production as they age, specifically testosterone. This decrease in testosterone can cause symptoms such as fatigue, decreased muscle mass, erectile dysfunction, and decreased libido. HRT for men involves replacing the testosterone that the body is no longer producing. This can be administered through injections, patches, or gels.
For Men:
HRT is most commonly used to treat the symptoms of menopause, which can include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, weight gain and sleep disturbances. HRT can also help prevent osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle, and reduce the risk of heart disease.
There are three types of HRT: estrogen-only therapy (ET), combined estrogen-progestin therapy (EPT) and Testosterone. Women who have had a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) can take ET, while women who still have their uterus need EPT to protect against the risk of endometrial cancer.
For Women:
As we age, our bodies undergo many changes, and one of those changes is a decrease in the production of hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. This decrease can cause a variety of symptoms, including hot flashes, mood swings, and a decreased libido. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment that can help alleviate these symptoms by replacing the hormones that the body is no longer producing. HRT can be administered in a variety of ways, including pills, patches, gels, and creams.
